Make your IT experience worth more.

CyberAndChill Brief #1: You probably don’t need to start over

One of my best-performing posts last week started like this:

“I used to deliver pizzas.
Now I make over $200k in tech, work remotely…
I’m not some genius FAANG engineer either…”

It reached 260,000+ people.

I care about that number for one reason:

It shows me what you’re paying attention to.

Experienced IT people want more from their careers without throwing away everything they already spent years learning.

The rest of that thread was basically my answer:

“I just got really good at figuring out what I needed to learn for the next job…”

Then:

“The closer I got to customers and revenue, the more valuable the same technical knowledge became…”

And eventually:

“They need to do more with what they already know…”

I didn’t keep starting over.

My experience compounded.

Each move gave the experience I already had a little more value.

That’s what I think an experienced IT career should eventually start doing.

You may already have experience you’re not counting

Another post that did well:

“If you’ve managed:

AD groups
MFA
Permissions
you don’t have ‘zero IAM experience.’

You may just not be describing your experience as identity work…”

You can do something for so long that it stops feeling like a skill.

It just feels like your job.

Then you see the same underlying work inside a better-paying role with a different title or tool attached to it.

And you assume you don’t qualify.

Sometimes that’s true.

Sometimes you’re just not giving yourself credit for experience you already have.

The filter I use

When I look at a better-paying job, I separate the requirements into:

✓ I already know this

↗ I could pick this up quickly

✕ This is a real gap

That’s a much better filter than treating every unfamiliar bullet point like another six-month study project.

The goal isn’t to convince yourself you’re qualified for everything.

It’s to get better at recognizing when you’re already close enough to make the move.

One question for this week

What job could you realistically get in the next six months that you’ve been telling yourself will take another year—or three?

Think of one.

That’s it.

You don’t need to build the roadmap yet.

Just name the job.

If you want help figuring out the move

This is also the kind of thing I help people work through 1-on-1.

We figure out where you’re trying to go, what your existing experience is actually worth, what you’re missing, and what you should be doing next.

Career. Positioning. Skills. Job search. Whatever the actual bottleneck is.
